Recycling
Electric recycling
Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) otherwise known as e-waste - is the fastest-growing waste stream within the UK, and the UK produces more WEEE waste per person than any country globally (other than Norway).
Approximately 1 million tonnes of household electrical and electronic waste is thrown away each year and it contains a variety of useful raw minerals and potentially harmful substances – all of which need to be recycled responsibly.
Since 2007, the UK has passed a law to hold producers responsible for the electrical products they import or manufacture, and Halfords is an obligated producer (WEE/FG0133ZR) who is registered with the compliance scheme: Clarity Environmental.
In addition to paying the required fees associated with recycling, we are required to uphold our responsibility by offering consumers an opportunity to return a similar electrical product as part of a sale (either at the point of sale or up to 28 days later with a valid receipt).
We are proud to be working alongside Material Focus’s campaign Recycle your Electricals, which is designed to increase awareness among consumers and improve the recycling of e-waste in the UK. We work on a like-for-like basis which means we can accept a cable for a cable, or a dash-cam for a dash-cam.

Further information:
As part of product safety standards, all electrical products should contain a crossed-out wheeled bin symbol on the product. This symbolises that the waste should be managed responsibly and not thrown in general waste bins.
Further information can be found via the government page here.
Battery recycling
Batteries should not be disposed of in general household waste, instead, they should be collected separately to ensure the correct treatment and recycling of the substances they contain. Battery recycling ensures the recovery of these materials and prevents any potentially harmful effects on both the environment and human health.
How Halfords can help you with recycling batteries
We want to make it easier for everyone to recycle their batteries. Speak with our colleagues who will help place these in our correct bins. This service is free of charge and can be used even if no purchase is made. This is in addition to our well-established collection and recycling of lead-acid car batteries.
Batteries are identified with a crossed-out wheeled bin symbol. Underneath this symbol, there will be a chemical symbol, if the battery contains more than 0.0005% mercury (Hg) or more than 0.002% cadmium (Cd) or 0.004% lead (Pb).
Individual button cells are not marked. However, a 1cm x 1cm crossed-out wheeled bin and the appropriate chemical symbol can be found on the back of the packaging.
Further Info
Halfords is a member of the Ecosurety UK Batteries Compliance Scheme and makes a financial contribution to cover the costs of recycling these domestic batteries.
Halfords is registered as a producer of batteries in the UK. Our producer registration number is BPRN00698.

Bike recycling
Across the UK millions of bikes lie unused and rusting, whereas, in some parts of Africa, a bike can provide a lifeline enabling people to travel to work, and school and carry goods further afield to sell.
Since 2013, Halfords have been working with Re-Cycle to gather donated bikes to send to rural Africa. Working together Halfords have collected just under 60,000 bikes which would otherwise have ended up in landfill. With over 70 Halfords drop-off locations across the country, now more than ever we are encouraging our customers to recycle their used bikes when they decide it's time for a new one. Wiper blade recycling
Halfords installs over 1 million wiper blades each year, so we designed a recycling process for this in every store across England, Wales & Scotland. Our store colleagues pack them in a box to be sent to our headquarters where we collect them in large volumes to be collected by our partners European Metal Recycling and MBA Polymers (a plastic recycling company) who use clever sorting technologies to recover most of the material to be recycled into material for remanufacturing.
