Can I still buy R44 car seats?
R44 tested car seats can currently still be purchased in the UK and are still subject to extensive testing, despite being phased out and replaced with R129 safety tested seats.
Car seat manufacturer Joie confirmed R44 seats are still reliable car seats and are safe to use but from 1st September 2023, authorities no longer accepted approvals for R44 car seats and from 1st September 2024, they could no longer sold by retailers, marketplaces and e-commerce in the EU - which includes the Republic of Ireland.
It's important to understand that customers can still use an R44 car seat that has been purchased after 1st September 2023, providing it still fits their child and is in good condition.
